DAVAO CITY — The death toll from the collapsed bridge in Marilog district in this city rose to five as the bodies of three more workers were dug from the rubble early Tuesday, July 25.

Rescuers found the bodies of Cris Napao, 44, a mason from Balusong, Matina here; Jimboy Liga, 28, boom truck operator from Catalunan Grande in this city; and Elmer Sayson, 44, from Banay-Banay, Davao Oriental.

This brought to five the number of workers who died when the bridge they were building in Barangay Malamba, Marilog collapsed at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, a report from the Davao City Police Office said.

Dario Dispo, 42, from Catalunan Grande, a foreman for the project, told the police 10 workers of Bojus Sun (not Bohusan as earlier reported) Builders & Supply Corporation were installing the side panel of the bridge using a boom truck when the structure collapsed, burying the seven workers.

He said the boom truck was positioned at the center of the bridge and that the bridge, which was about 60 feet from the ground, had collapsed on top of the seven workers into the river.

Among the bodies retrieved earlier were Jay Bangonan, 22, a mason; and Rolando Abing, 40, a laborer from Sitio Kibakak, Barangay Malamba.

Two workers survived and were immediately rushed to Kibalang Hospital for injuries.

The survivors were Meljay Bero, 29, laborer from Monkayo, Davao de Oro; and Jonathan Dispo, 38, a mason from Catalunan Grande.
