LEGAZPI CITY — Classes at all levels and work in Catanduanes province were suspended on Monday due to heavy rains and flooding triggered by Typhoon Egay (international name: Doksuri).
In a memorandum. Gov. Joseph Cua said work in government offices was suspended except for those involved in the provision of basic necessities, delivery of basic services, and disaster response.
The suspension of work in private companies was left at the discretion of their management.
John Tolentino of the operation and warning division of the San Andres municipal disaster risk reduction and management office, said continuous rains caused flooding in the villages of Mayngaway and Divino Rostro, while rockslides were also noted in the villages of Manambrag and Lubas.
Tolentino said no families were evacuated in these areas.
Gremil Alexis Naz, Office of Civil Defense Bicol spokesperson, said 3,104 passengers, 477 rolling cargoes, and 20 vessels were stranded after sea trips were suspended in several ports in Albay, Catanduanes, Masbate, and Sorsogon.
In its 5 a.m. bulletin, Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said Egay was last spotted 565 kilometers (km) East of Baler, Aurora, moving 15 km per hour (kph) and carrying sustained winds of 140 kph and gustiness of up to 170 kph.
Pagasa raised Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 2 in the southeastern portion of Isabela (Palanan, Dinapigue) and northeastern portion of Catanduanes (Pandan, Bagamanoc, Panganiban, Viga, Gigmoto).
TCWS No. 1 was also hoisted in Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, the rest of Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon, Masbate, and other Luzon and Visayas areas. INQ
