TACLOBAN CITY — Ninety-four families, composed of 340 individuals, lost their homes in Barangay 42, Quarry District in this city in a fire on Monday, May 30, that lasted more than an hour.
Senior Fire Officer 2 Alvin Anthony Duran, officer-on-case, said they were still conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the fire.
“The fire spread so fast because most of the structures were made of light materials,” he said in a phone interview.
The fire that started at 1:17 p.m. and put out at 2:32 p.m. destroyed at least 49 houses, the initial report showed.
Initial damage was pegged at P1 million.
Duran said the fire could have started at the house of a certain Joseph Sabadlab.
City Mayor Alfred Romualdez immediately ordered the City Social Welfare and Development Office to provide for the needs of the victims, such as food packs, kitchen utensils, and hygiene kits.
“I am thankful to the Bureau of Fire for their quick response. No one was hurt or killed due to the fire incident. We will give them temporary shelter and financial aid,” he said.
Many of the fire victims were temporarily housed in the village’s covered court while the rest stay with their relatives.
