4.8-magnitude earthquake rattles Surigao City
DAVAO CITY — A magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck Surigao City and nearby areas before dawn on Tuesday, with state seismologists warning of possible damage.
The tectonic tremor occurred at 1:08 a.m. with its epicenter estimated 13 kilometers northwest of San Francisco town in Surigao del Norte. It had a depth of 13 kms, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
Intensity V shaking was felt in Surigao City, while Intensity I was recorded in the City of Cabadbaran in Agusan del Norte, some 100 kms to the south, as well as in Hinunangan town in Southern Leyte, Phivolcs said.
Damage was expected, Phivolcs warned.
