MABALACAT CITY, Pampanga — A former communist fighter had surrendered and turned over a handgun, live bullets and an explosive device in Camiling town, Tarlac province, the Central Luzon police disclosed on Thursday, April 27.

In a statement, Police Regional Office 3 director Brigadier General Jose Hidalgo Jr. identified the former rebel only as “Ka Libreng,” who belonged to the Kilusang Larangan Gerilya Tarlac-Zambales area.

He said Ka Libreng decided to surrender on April 25 to take advantage of the government’s programs under the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict.

The former rebel turned over a caliber.38 revolver with four live bullets and a 40-mm explosive.

Hidalgo said three former members of a group identified by the police as a front for the New People’s Army also surrendered in Tarlac.

Like Ka Libreng, the three men are also expected to receive livelihood, educational, and cash incentives under the national government’s programs for rebel returnees. INQ
