MANILA, Philippines — The heat index in Butuan City, Agusan del Norte reached 48°C on Friday noon which is within the “danger” category, the state weather bureau said.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) explained that an area is labeled under the danger category when its temperature hits the 42°C to 51°C heat index range.
It said the heat index logged in Butuan City on Friday noon was the highest in the country from March 1 to April 21.
Pagasa also noted that 13 other areas in the country reached the danger category on Friday. These areas were:
- Legazpi City, Albay: 47°C
- Catarman, Northern Samar: 44°C
- Virac, Catanduanes: 44°C
- Baler, Aurora: 43°C
- Dagupan City, Pangasinan: 43°C
- Iba, Zambales: 43°C
- Pasay City: 43°C
- Muñoz, Nueva Ecija: 42°C
- Davao City: 42°C
- Maasin, Southern Leyte: 42°C
- Masbate City: 42°C
- Tacloban City, Leyte: 42°C
- Tayabas City, Quezon: 42°C
Heat index measures the level of discomfort an average person experiences due to the combined effects of temperature and air humidity.
