The warm and dry season is a time for fun and relaxation, but it can also bring dangers to our furry companions.
As temperatures rise, pets are at risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion, and other heat-related illnesses. But with a little extra attention and care, pet owners can keep their four-legged companions cool and comfortable during the hot weather. From providing shade to offering refreshing treats, there are many ways to help pets beat the heat.
According to the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), pets are more susceptible to heatstroke than humans due to their inability to sweat. They rely on panting to regulate their body temperature, which is not always enough during warm weather.
Here are various methods to help prevent heat-related ailments and discomfort that pets may experience due to soaring temperatures:
- Provide plenty of water. Ensure your pets have access to fresh, clean water at all times to help keep them hydrated and regulate their body temperature.
- Keep them cool. Provide a cool, shaded area for your pets to rest indoors or outdoors. You can also use a fan or air conditioning to keep the place cool.
- Avoid exercising them during the hottest parts of the day. Exercise your pets early in the morning or later in the evening when the temperature is cooler and more bearable.
- Avoid hot surfaces. Avoid walking your pets on hot surfaces like asphalt or concrete. These surfaces can get very hot and burn your pets’ paws.
- Don’t leave your pets in a parked car. Even with windows that are cracked open, a parked car can quickly become a death trap for pets in hot weather.
- Monitor for signs of heatstroke. Symptoms of heatstroke in pets include heavy panting, rapid heartbeat, vomiting, and lethargy. If you suspect your pet is suffering from heatstroke, seek veterinary attention immediately.
Meanwhile, if a pet experiences heat-related illnesses and show signs of distress in hot weather, pet owners should take the following actions:
- Move the pet to a cool and shaded area.
- Offer the pet cool water to drink.
- Use cool water to wet the pet’s fur, especially the stomach and feet.
- Use a fan or air conditioning to cool the area.
- Contact a veterinarian for further advice and treatment if necessary.
- Avoid giving medication to the pet without consulting a veterinarian first.
Most importantly, pet owners must remain vigilant and act quickly at the first signs of discomfort.
Taking immediate action and providing prompt treatment is vital to prevent severe heat-related illnesses in pets. By being proactive and following the necessary precautions, pet owners can keep their furry friends comfortable and safe throughout the hot and dry season.
