Davao de Oro’s first governor dies at 73

TAGUM CITY, Davao del Norte — Lawyer Jose Caballero, more known as Joecab, the former governor of Compostela Valley (now Davao de Oro) province, died on Friday, his family announced. He was 73.

No details were given as to the cause of Caballero’s death in an announcement on Facebook by his daughter, provincial board member Kristine Caballero.

“Soar high Joecab. We love you so much and thank you!” the younger Caballero wrote.

Born on March 22, 1950, Caballero was a prominent legal practitioner in the Davao region before he entered politics.

He was the first elected chief executive of the province after it was carved out of Davao del Norte in a 1998 plebiscite. He served for three consecutive terms until 2007.

The late governor’s remains lie at Cosmopolitan Memorial Chapels in Davao City with interment details yet to be announced.
