MANILA, Philippines — Even with a slim chance of becoming a tropical cyclone, the low-pressure area (LPA) off Northern Samar will still trigger rain in several locations across the country on Friday, said the state weather bureau.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said the LPA was last spotted 295 kilometers east of the town of Catarman.

“Magandang balita: Itong LPA ay nananatiling mababa ang tsansa na maging bagyo pero magdadala pa rin ng mga kalat-kalat na pag-ulan at thunderstorm sa bansa,” weather specialist  Aldczar Aurelio said in a late Thursday afternoon public forecast.

(Good news: This LPA still has low chance of turning into a storm, but it will bring scattered rains and thunderstorms in the country.)

LPA-induced overcast skies with sporadic rain showers will persist over Bicol Region, Eastern Visayas and Dinagat Islands, he added.

Meanwhile, Aurelio noted that the northeast monsoon – locally termed “hanging amihan” – still affects Northern and Central Luzon despite its weakening state.
