MANILA, Philippines — The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Thursday opened a new solid waste management (SWM) warehouse in Taguig City and distributed SWM tools and equipment to nine barangays that participated in the Metro Manila Flood Management Project Phase 1.
The warehouse is located at the Labasan Pumping Station and will serve as a holding area and stockyard for the SWM tools and equipment.
According to MMDA General Manager Usec. Procopio Lipana, the warehouse, will make solid waste management collection easier.
“With the establishment of the Labasan Warehouse, these barangays are assured that the tools and equipment needed for solid waste management are well taken care of and maintained before distribution,” Lipana said in a statement.
The warehouse, said Lipana, includes office space, quarters, and storage room for the goods under the “Recyclables Mo, Palit Grocery Ko” project.
“The provision of these SWM tools and equipment can support the barangays in the implementation of programs and activities that prevent solid wastes from reaching the pumping stations and encourage the community to actively participate in all solid waste management activities,” said Lipana.
The project also aims to reduce vulnerability to and strengthen resilience against floods, and also improve the solid waste management system within the communities near the project drainage areas, according to the MMDA. – Meralyn Melitante, Inquirer.net trainee
