MANILA, Philippines — Senators have visited the wake of Negros Oriental Gov. Roel Degamo, who was killed right inside his residence in Pamplona town last March 4.

Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri, Senate Majority Leader Joel Villanueva, and Senators JV Ejercito, Pia Cayetano, Sherwin Gatchalian, Robin Padilla, Jinggoy Estrada, Christopher “Bong” Go, and Ramon “Bong” Revilla went to Degamo’s wake to pay their last respects.

During Tuesday’s plenary session, Zubiri reported that they delivered the approved Senate resolutions expressing their condolences and condemnation of Degamo’s assassination.

“They were very happy that they’re getting a lot of support from national government officials at sabi po nga niya ay (she said that) at least hindi po siya nakakalimutan ng (Degamo was not forgotten by) national officials,” Zubiri said.

“Natatakot po sila dahil sa banta sa kanilang buhay (They are scared of the threat on their lives). We express our support that we’ll continue to monitor the situation to make sure that they would be given the justice to the family, justice that they deserve,” he added.

On the other hand, Villanueva said: “It goes to show that we are all very concerned and united in crying for justice for the late Governor Roel Degamo.”

In a message to INQUIRER.net, Zubiri disclosed that he, Villanueva, Ejercito, Cayetano, and Gatchalian donated P50,000 to each of the eight bereaved families while “a little more” was given to the wife of Degamo.

Degamo and eight provincial staff and constituents were killed while 16 others, including three provincial officials, were wounded in the gun attack.
