Marcos condoles with kin of Adamson U student: There should be no room for violence in student organizations

MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Wednesday said there should be no room for violence in student organizations as he condoled with the family of a chemical engineering student of Adamson University who allegedly died due to fraternity hazing.

Marcos assured the family of John Matthew Salilig, whom he described as a “son of the nation with a bright future ahead of him,” that justice will be served

“John was a child, a brother, a friend, a classmate, and a son of this nation, with a bright future ahead of him. It is not through violence that we can measure the strength of our brotherhood,” he said in a statement.

“There should be no room for violence in our student organizations which our children consider family, and in our schools which they consider their second home,” he added.

The remains of Salilig, 24, who had been reported missing since February 18, was found dead in a grassy area in Imus, Cavite.

Police earlier said Salilig was attending the initiation rites of a fraternity – Tau Gamma Phi – in Laguna on the day he was reported missing.

A total of 12 persons allegedly involved in Salilig’s death have been identified, of which nine remain at large.

Police said that out of the 12, one is confirmed as a suspect while 11 are considered persons of interest.

The Department of Justice has ordered the National Bureau of Investigation to conduct a parallel investigation on Salilig’s death.
