MANILA, Philippines — While the 37th anniversary of the People Power Revolution commemorates the Filipinos’ freedom from the dictatorship of late president Ferdinand Marcos Sr., different groups have used the opportunity to fight for current issues as well.
Some protesters wore yellow headbands bearing the words “Never Again”, a prominent battle cry against Martial Law.
Labor rights were also a prominent call, with some asking for a minimum wage increase.
Others also cried for justice for those who were untimely killed.
The memory of Mark Chua, the student who was killed after he exposed corruption in the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps of the University of Santo Tomas, is recalled in one of the signs slamming the revival of mandatory training.
Chad Booc, a Lumad teacher who was killed in a military encounter in 2022, is also remembered among protestors.
Around the protestors also loomed police presence.
This day marks the first People Power Anniversary under the administration of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., the son of the man who was ousted by the revolution.
