/ 06:51 AM April 08, 2012

CEBU Archbishop Jose Palma was unable to officiate Mass on Maundy Thursday  after undergoing surgery  two days earlier.

“We request your prayers for the speedy and complete recovery of Archbishop (Jose) Palma,” announced  Ricardo Cardinal Vidal, during the homily of the 4 p.m. Mass which Palma would have celebrated at the Metropolitan Cathedral.

Vidal said that Palma was recovering at a  hospital and there was “nothing to worry” about.

Vidal later told reporters that Palma was recovering from an operation.

Vidal  didn’t say what the ailment was although there were initial reports that the archbishop suffered gallbladder stones.

“It seems now and then he complained to me about his stomachache. We thought it was just uneasiness or he might have eaten something. But then the other day (last Tuesday), he experienced so much pain, so he was admitted in the hospital,” Vidal said.

Vidal couldn’t say when the archbishop would be well enough to resume his duties.

“We will see if he will be able to continue his ordinary work because the doctor is very much concerned about (his condition),” he said.
