Christmas floods death toll rises to 44; 28 missing — NDRRMC

MANILA, Philippines — The death toll from the  shear line-induced rains and floods over the Christmas weekend has risen to 44, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) announced on Friday.

Twenty four of the deaths were reported in Northern Mindanao, six in the Bicol Region, four in the Zamboanga Peninsula, four in the Davao region, three in Eastern Visayas, and three in the Caraga region. 

The number of missing people also increased from 25 to 28 , while 12 individuals were reported injured.

At least 509,340 persons were affected by the massive flooding in parts of Southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

Damage to agriculture, so far, has been pegged at P234,781,657.42, while damage to infrastructure is now estimated to be around P1,130,405,000. 

The province of Misamis Occidental is under a state of calamity (SOC), said the NDRRMC.

Six other municipalities and cities are likewise under a state of calamity, namely: Llorente in Eastern Samar, Dapitan and Polanco in Zamboanga Del Norte, Gingoog in Misamis Oriental, and Ozamiz and Sinacaban in Misamis Occidental,.

The shear line—where warm and cold winds converge—triggered heavy rains in the southern parts of the country during the Christmas weekend which resulted in massive flooding and landslides.
