LAOAG CITY, Ilocos Norte — A family of five died in a road mishap on Sunday, Oct. 20, at the national highway at Barangay Sucsuquen in Piddig town, Ilocos Norte province, police said.

The fatalities were identified as Eduard Burgos, 41, who was driving a tricycle, his minor sons, Eljay Burgos and Liam Burgos, and his parents-in-law, Tranquilino Balino and Zenaida Balino, as passengers.

Investigators said the victims were on their way home to Barangay San Jose in Sarrat town after attending the wake of a relative in Piddig.

Lieutenant Rudy James Jacalne, Piddig police chief, said a black Toyota Vios hit the tricycle when its driver, Jonathan Pacaro, lost control of the vehicle while overtaking, and collided with the tricycle traveling on the other side of the road.

The collision left the tricycle wrecked and the car front portion ruined.

Eduardo and the Balino couple were pronounced dead on the spot, while Eduardo’s sons were rushed to Piddig District Hospital but were declared dead on arrival, according to the police.

Pacaro of Barangay Ester in Vintar was drunk during the accident. He was unhurt, the police said.

He surrendered to the police around 11 p.m. and is now under their custody, said Jacalne.

Police said they would file multiple criminal charges against Pacaro, including reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicides, property damage, and violation of the anti-drunk driving act. INQ
