6,285 families in Negros Occidental affected by floods triggered by Paeng

BACOLOD CITY — Floods spawned by Severe Tropical Storm Paeng (international name: Nalgae)  affected 28,722 residents, 11,173 of whom sought shelter in evacuation centers in Negros Occidental and Bacolod City on Friday and Saturday, October 28 and 29.

A  fisherman went missing, houses and pump boats were destroyed, and cemeteries were flooded.

There were 6,285 families with 27,156 individuals affected by the floods in seven cities and nine towns  in Negros Occidental as of 9 a.m. Saturday, said Provincial Social Welfare Officer Merle Garcia.

She said 2,435 families with 9,607 individuals stayed in evacuation centers.

In Bacolod City, 438 families composed of 1,566 individuals also evacuated in 14 barangays (villages).

Fisherman Peter Ferrer Peraren, 32, a resident of Cauayan town, remained missing, said town social welfare officer Eugenia Caña.

She said Peraren’s boat capsized while he went fishing on Friday.

Three houses  were destroyed  and five were damaged by the floods in Cauayan.

The waters in Barangay Caliling, Cauayan, that rose almost to the top of a church roof subsided on Saturday.
