MANILA, Philippines — Tropical Depression Obet is forecast to generate heavy rainfall over parts of northern Luzon by Friday, the state weather service said.
According to the latest weather bulletin of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) on Thursday, “moderate to heavy with at times intense rains” would affect Batanes, Babuyan Islands, Ilocos Norte, Apayao, and the northern portion of Cagayan.
It likewise said that the northern portion of Ilocos Sur, Abra, Kalinga, and the rest of Cagayan would experience “light to moderate with at times heavy rains.”
But, “[p]rior to the arrival of tropical cyclone rainfall, the shear line may bring at times heavy rains over Batanes, Cagayan Valley, Apayao, and Ilocos Norte in the next 24 hours,” Pagasa noted.
Pagasa then warned that the anticipated substantial amount of rainfall could induce landslides in the aforementioned areas. State meteorologists likewise advised affected residents to clean up drainage systems and harvest as many crops as are ready for picking.
Also, based on Pagasa’s 11 a.m. advisory, Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 is still raised over Batanes, the Babuyan Islands, and the northeastern portion of Cagayan (Santa Ana, Gonzaga).
Obet was last located 745 kilometers east of Basco, Batanes, packing maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness of 55 kph and moving westward at 10 kph.
Obet is predicted to leave the Philippine area of responsibility by Saturday evening (October 22), Pagasa said.
