DSWD: Over 2,000 individuals affected by Neneng in Ilocos Norte

LAOAG CITY, Ilocos Norte — At least 597 families, or 2,436 individuals, were affected by heavy rains and strong winds spawned by Typhoon Neneng (international name: Nesat) in Ilocos Norte province, according to the latest report from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) on Sunday, Oct. 16.

These families belong to nine villages in four towns in the province, the agency added.

In the capital city of Laoag, some 35 families, or 121 individuals, were evacuated from their homes as Neneng battered the city, according to Mayor Michael Marcos Keon.

Keon said in a social media statement that the typhoon hit at least 15 barangays and damaged four houses.

Based on the initial assessment from the Laoag’s Agriculture Office, Neneng destroyed some P6.9 million worth of agricultural crops, including rice and corn.

Only one person was reported injured in the city, said Keon. The mayor did not provide details on the injured person.

In Dingras, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in the Ilocos region said that it was able to provide financial assistance to members of a family, including a five-month-old kid, after a huge tree uprooted by Neneng’s fierce wind crashed on their home.

The family was receiving treatment at a hospital in Batac City, the DSWD said.
