Aurora loses P154M in agri, P72M in infra due to Karding

The cost of damage to the country's agriculture sector brought about by the onslaught of typhoon Karding has reached P1.97 billion, said the Department of Agriculture (DA).

MABALACAT CITY, Pampanga — Aurora province suffered P154 million in damage to agriculture and P72 million to infrastructure due to Super Typhoon Karding (international name: Noru), the provincial government disclosed on Wednesday, Sept. 28.

Rice had the most damage at P97.9 million, followed by high-value crops (P45.8 million), fisheries (P35 million), corn (P4.09 million), and livestock (P315,900), it said.

The provincial government said infrastructure damage in Dingalan town included 32 classrooms and related facilities, a government building, and health facilities.

The Aurora government said 594 houses were destroyed and 6,884 more were damaged in Dingalan, Casiguran, and San Luis.

In Dingalan alone, 589 houses were destroyed, while 6,734 were damaged.

Aurora also lost P29.4 million in potential income from tourists.

Karding made a second landfall at 8:26 p.m. on Sept. 25 in Dingalan.

The provincial government said it evacuated 3,629 families (13,467 individuals) in 96 villages of Aurora’s nine towns before the typhoon’s onslaught.

It reported zero casualties, adding that 23 people suffered only punctured wounds and lacerations.

As of Thursday morning, all roads and bridges in the province were passable.

Power has also been restored, except in Dingalan, where cellular communication remained unstable as of Wednesday evening. INQ
