Workers unearth 45 grenades in Cavite

LUCENA CITY—Construction workers, who were excavating a river bank on Monday, recovered a cache of explosives in Kawit town in Cavite province.

The Cavite police information office reported on Tuesday, Sept. 20, that a Bernard Jose Iborde went to the local police around 8:30 p.m. and turned over 45 unfired M203 grenades.

The police said that while doing excavation work earlier that day, Iborde and his co-workers found the buried explosives along the river bank in Barangay San Sebastian.

The police sought assistance from the Explosive and Ordnance Unit for proper disposal of the grenades.

Colonel Christopher Olazo, Cavite police chief, commended the acts of the civilians.

“The timely report of the discovered UXO (unexploded ordnance) could save hundreds of lives, and if [they fall] into the wrong hands, might cause serious damage both in lives and property,” Olazo said in a statement.

Police are still investigating to trace the origin of the grenades.
