Back-to-back earthquakes hit Davao Occidental

MANILA, Philippines — Two earthquakes hit Davao Occidental on Saturday, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

State seismologists recorded a magnitude 5.1 quake at 1:20 a.m. and located its epicenter 351 kilometers southeast of Balut Island, Municipality of Sarangani, Davao Occidental.  The tectonic earthquake’s depth was 11 kilometers.

Minutes later, it was followed by a magnitude 4.4 earthquake that was located 371 kilometers southwest of Balut Island. Phivolcs said that this tectonic earthquake had a depth of focus of 32 kilometers.

Phivolcs did not specify if this earthquake was an aftershock of the earlier magnitude 5.1 earthquake.

According to Phivolcs, no aftershocks and damages are expected after the magnitude 4.4, and no intensities were reported for either quake.
