DepEd building 325 temporary learning spaces in Luzon earthquake-hit areas

MANILA, Philippines – A total of 325 temporary learning spaces are being constructed in areas jolted by the magnitude 7 earthquake in Luzon last July, Department of Education (DepEd) spokesperson Michael Poa said Friday, three days from the start of the new school year.

“Doon sa Abra, which alam naman natin talagang naapektuhan ng napakalakas na lindol, we have downloaded the funds and are currently constructing 165 temporary learning spaces. Ongoing na po,”  Poa said during a press conference.

The DepEd earlier reported over 9,000 schools affected by the powerful earthquake. Among those, 451 classrooms were destroyed and 706 others were damaged.

Poa said that despite the earthquake, the enrollment turnout in Abra was good.

He added that the department also set up 163 similar facilities in areas  still reeling from the aftermath of typhoons Odette and Agaton.
