MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Sunday maintained alert level 1 in Taal Volcano after continuing to record low-level unrest and observing a volcanic smog.
In its latest Taal Volcano advisory, Phivolcs said it continued to record a sulfur dioxide flux of 3,945 tonnes per day, with upwelling of hot volcanic fluid in the main crater, causing a “vog,” or volcanic smog to also be observed.
Plumes 2,100 meters tall were also observed by Phivolcs which drifted south-southwest.
Meanwhile, no volcanic earthquakes or low-level background tremors have so far been observed.
According to Phivolcs, under alert level 1, entry into the island especially the Main Crater and Daang Kastila fissures is prohibited. Aircraft are also barred from flying close to the volcano.
Just on Friday, a total of 13,572 tons of volcanic sulfur dioxide was emitted from the main crater of Taal Volcano in Batangas, causing volcanic smog or “vog” over the Taal Caldera.
