Furigay family lawyer sees speedy trial of alleged Ateneo gunman

MANILA, Philippines — The trial of Chao Tiao Yumol, the suspect in the Ateneo gun attack that killed former Lamitan City mayor Rose Furigay, may not take more than six months to be finished, a lawyer representing the Furigay family said Thursday.

Yumol is facing complaints for illegal possession of firearms and malicious mischief, as well as three counts of murder for the deaths of Furigay, her aide Victor Capistrano, and Ateneo de Manila University security guard Jeneven Bandiala. He is also facing a count of frustrated murder for the injuries sustained by Hannah Rose Marian, Furigay’s daughter.

“If we will follow the latest circular of the Supreme Court regarding speedy trial, this trial may not last for more than six months,” Qurino Esguerra, lawyer of the Furigay family, said over ABS-CBN News Channel.

Yumol pleaded “not guilty” for the illegal possession of firearms and malicious mischief complaints filed before the Quezon City Metropolitan Trial Court Branch 133. Meanwhile Yumol’s arraignment for the three counts of murder and the case of frustrated murder lodged against him is set on Thursday.

Esguerra also expressed confidence that Yumol will be convicted for all the charges he is facing following a speedy trial.

“We will prosecute him to the fullest and ensure his conviction,” he said.
