MANILA, Philippines — Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Jaime Bautista tested positive for COVID-19, his office announced.

The DOTr, in a statement on Friday, confirmed that Bautista contracted COVID-19 days before the first State of the Nation Address (Sona) of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.

“Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista has tested positive for COVID-19. He is now in isolation, and is exhibiting mild symptoms of headache and cough,” the DOTr said.

The DOTr assured, however, that Bautista “will continue to perform his duties, and will be in constant communication with his staff.”

Bautista was formerly a president of Philippine Airlines and the airline’s chief operating officer.

Last week, Bautista inspected the transport department’s programs in preparation for an expected surge in commuters with the opening of in-person classes.
