Alleged rebel nabbed, 13 others surrendered in Bicol

An alleged member of the New People’s Army (NPA) was arrested while 13 others surrendered to the government on Wednesday (July 20) and Thursday (July 21) in the Bicol region, police said.

LEGAZPI CITY — An alleged member of the New People’s Army (NPA) was arrested while 13 others surrendered to the government on Wednesday (July 20) and Thursday (July 21) in the Bicol region, police said.

Police Major Maria Luisa Calubaquib, Bicol police spokersperson, said in a report that authorities served an arrest warrant against a farmer identified as Benny Turing, aka Geny Toring, 52, in Barangay (village) Villahermosa in Cawayan town in Masbate on Thursday at around 11:10 a.m.

Calubaquib said Turing was a member of the Larangan 2 of Komiteng Probinsya 4 under the command of Ruel Ybanez, operating in the third district of the province.

The police did not give details on the robbery with homicide case of the suspect.

Meanwhile, 13 unnamed members of NPA surrendered to the police at Camp Captain Salvador Jaucian Del Rosario, Sr. in Barangay Sta. Cruz in Ligao City in Albay on Wednesday at around 9 a.m.

In a belated report, Calubaquib said they were members of Larangan 1, Komiteng Probinsya 5 of the Bicol Regional Party Committee.

The former rebels also turned over a M16 rifle, a caliber .45 with a magazine loaded with four bullets, a caliber 30 M1 Garand rifle and a caliber .38 revolver.

Calubaquib said they would be provided with financial assistance under the government’s Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program.
