MANILA, Philippines — A motorcycle thief was killed after supposedly resisting arrest and exchanging fire with police officers in Novaliches, Quezon City.

According to the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) on Monday night, local police placed checkpoints and were doing dragnet operations along the stretch of General Luis Street in Barangay Nagkaisang Nayon last June 24 after recent incidents of motornapping in nearby Sikatuna Village, Barangay San Bartolome.

Novaliches Police Station commander Lt. Col. Von June Nuyda told QCPD that the officers then saw the stolen motorcycle being operated by a person who fitted the description given by witnesses.

But instead of yielding to authorities, QCPD said that the suspect opened fire on the officers.

A short exchange of fire happened along SB Road in Barangay Nagkaisang Nayon which led to the death of the suspect.

The suspect has not been identified but QCPD said he was 5’4 tall, wearing a black jacket, maong pants, a black full-face bonnet, a black hat, and slippers.

Both QCPD director Brig. Gen. Remus Medina and National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) director Maj. Gen. Felipe Natividad reminded the public to remain vigilant and secure valuables to avoid these incidents.

“Ikinalulungkot ko ang kinahantungan ng insidenteng ito. Muli, nais kong paalalahanan ang publiko na manatiling mapagmatyag dahil laganap ngayon ang pagnanakaw. Kung maaari, bigyang seguridad ang mga mahahalagang gamit tulad ng motorsiklo, cellphone at bag,” Medina said.

“The continuing and unwavering effort of our men geared towards maintaining peace and order in our community is truly admirable. It reflects our untiring commitment as we vow to serve and protect the public from all forms of criminality and persons who may inflict harm,” Natividad added.
