Classes in Sorsogon town suspended amid Bulusan unrest

LEGAZPI CITY – Classes in the elementary and secondary levels, in both private and public schools in Juban town in Sorsogon province will be suspended on Monday, June 13, due to the threat of Mount Bulusan‘s phreatic eruption on Sunday.

Arian Aguallo, information officer of the municipal disaster risk reduction and management office said on Sunday that the suspension covers classes in elementary and secondary in public and private schools.

Aguallo said out of 25 villages, only the village of Guruyan was not affected by the ash fall in the town.

As of 1 p.m., at least 116 families or 366 individuals from Barangay Puting Sapa were evacuated at Juban Evacuation Center, the town’s gymnasium and Tughan Evacuation Center.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology recorded a phreatic eruption at 3:37 a.m. that lasted for 18 minutes.

The ash fall also reached the towns of Casiguran, Magallanes, Castilla, Pilar and Sorsogon City in Sorsogon province and Legazpi City in Albay.

Alert level 1 still prevails over the volcano since its earlier phreatic eruption on June 5.
