COTABATO CITY––Police are hunting the suspect who shot and critically injured a village chairperson in Midsayap town, Cotabato.
The victim miraculously survived but with bullet wounds on his thighs and back, Lt. Colonel Rolly Oranza, Midsayap town police chief, said Monday.
Nestor Rabara, chairman of Barangay Lower Glad, Midsayap, suffered multiple bullet wounds after an unidentified person shot him on Saturday, May 21, while having dinner at home, Oranza said.
Rabara is the younger brother of Cotabato Board Member-elect Manuel Rabara.
He was taking his dinner at his home in Purok 2, Barangay Lower Glad at 7 p.m. on Saturday when a man, who peeked through his house windows, shot him.
“The gunman immediately fled on a motorbike,” Oranza said. Witnesses described the suspect as medium-built, sporting a bull cap and a face mask.
The elder Rabara, who once served as town mayor, said his brother had no known enemy and had been well-loved by the people of Barangay Lower Glad. He also had no armed escorts.
Oranza said the village official was first hit in his thigh, fell off his chair, and crawled for cover, but the gunman fired more shots before he fled.
Relatives and neighbors rushed him to the hospital.
Responding police found empty shells for a caliber-45 pistol at the crime scene.
Oranza said police investigators were taking into consideration several possible motives for the attack, including the various land disputes that Rabara helped settle in the village.
