MANILA, Philippines — The miting de avance of presidential candidate Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso on Saturday on Moriones Street in Tondo, Manila, his home turf, was attended by 50,000 people, according to the Manila Police District.

There were few buses or jeepneys parked around the area that would indicate that some people were brought in – that is, were “hakot” — from other areas.

However, there were a number of free e-trike rides for those who wished to attend the gathering. These e-trikes traversed the entire city to look for supporters waiting for a ride.

Also present at the event were Moreno’s running mate, Dr. Willie Ong, and their entire senatorial ticket, namely Samira Gutoc, Jopet Sison, Carl Balita, and former Agrarian Reform chief John Castriciones.

Other politicians present were Senate reelectionist JV Ejercito; mayoralty candidate Vice Mayor Honey Lacuna and her vice mayorlaty candidate, Manila Third District Rep. Yul Servo, and those who are seeking a seat in the city council.

Moreno started his speech, which lasted for an hour, reminiscing the hardships of his life as a young boy in Tondo.

However, as he went on, his speech turned into a diatribe against contender Vice President Leni Robredo and her supporters who held their miting de avance at Ayala Avenue in Makati.

“Those who were in Ayala Avenue, they are the ones who promised us change. They promised it in 1986. Since 1986, the reds and yellows have been fighting,” Moreno said in Filipino, referring to the 1986 People Power Revolution that led to the overthrow of then-President Ferdinand Marcos.

“Until when will we keep fighting? Until when will our world revolve around reds and yellows?” he said.
