2 dead in Northern Samar town fire

CATARMAN, Northern Samar––Two persons died after being trapped in a fire on Monday, May 2, in Barangay Talisay, Catarman town.

Senior Inspector Darwin Orsolino, Catarman fire marshall, said the fire started around 4:30 a.m. at the residence of spouses Manuel and Rosanie Bautista.

The couple’s 18-year-old daughter and 10-year-old grandson were still sleeping and failed to get out.

“The daughter woke up and shouted for help but were unable to get out of the house because the fire was already huge,” Orsolino said.

The fire also burned down the nearby residence of spouses Delfin and Marites Oronos.

The fire was extinguished at 5:45 a.m.

Fire investigators have yet to determine the cause of the blaze.

“We are looking at the overheated ceiling fan. It possibly started from the second floor of the (Bautista) residence, and the fire spread fast because the house was made of light materials. An investigation is ongoing, so we cannot give any conclusion yet,” Orsolino said.

The damage was pegged at around P600,000.
