MANILA, Philippines — The estimated total agricultural damage caused by tropical cyclone “Agaton” jumped to P1.4 billion on Tuesday, said the Department of Agriculture (DA).
This is double the damage reported on Monday, which was at P718 million.
According to the DA, the damage and losses amount to a volume loss of 35,258 metric tons (MT), affecting a total of 23,188 farmers and fishers, and 17,384 hectares of agricultural land.
Meanwhile, the majority of the commodities affected continue to be rice crops totalling 33,501 MT of volume loss worth P595.6 million.
The second is corn with a volume loss at 891 MT amounting to P21.4 million.
High value crops, on the other hand, particularly, vegetables, cacaos and fruits, suffered a volume loss of 866 MT worth P30 million.
An estimated loss of P7.2 million, or 12,771 heads were also reported on livestock and poultry, specifically chicken, swine, carabao, duck and goat.
