BACOLOD CITY — Negrense senatorial candidate Alex Lacson called on netizens and cyber warriors on Tuesday, April 5, to unite on social media in the campaign against political dynasties in the Senate.
Lacson, who was campaigning in Negros Occidental, said there are many new faces who want to serve in the Senate instead of bringing back “trapos and dynasties.”
“Social media must be the beginning of change in our society and government… Let us use our voice on social media to call for radical political and economic reforms in our country,” said Lacson, who is running for senator under the Kapatiran Party and Tropang Leni-Kiko.
Lacson urged netizens to spread the often obscured fact that dynasties are one of the reasons why the majority of Filipinos continue to suffer.
“According to studies, political clans infiltrate the legislature so that up to 70 percent of legislators are members of political dynasties. Almost all provinces in the Philippines are also controlled by political families,” he said.
“What we must understand is that political dynasties are against our Constitution and so far no law has been passed against political dynasties because lawmakers will not enact an anti-political dynasty law that will impede their interests. They do not want to lose power so until now no anti-dynasty law has been passed,” he added.
Lacson said the excuse of the defenders of political dynasties is that the people vote for them so there is nothing wrong with political dynasties.
“People vote for them because no one else dares to fight them because their families are powerful and wealthy. Dynasties perpetuate patronage politics and vote buying,” Lacson said.
He called on cyber warriors and netizens to use their platforms and accounts to explain that these dynasties need to be overthrown.
