MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has amended Resolution 10728 on the gun ban to fast-track the issuance of certificates of exemptions, Chairman Saidamen Pangarungan announced in a statement issued on Wednesday.

The Committee on the Ban on Firearms and Security Concerns was given one week, starting Wednesday, to finalize the proposed amendments.

“These amendments include the decentralization of the granting of exemption to the Regional Directors and Election Officers and the grant of automatic exemption to justices, judges, and prosecutors, including the Ombudsman,” Pangarungan said.

In the meantime, the Comelec en banc has resolved to expedite the processing of all the pending applications before the committee.

The Comelec gun ban is in effect from Jan. 9 to June 8, 2022.

As of Wednesday, a total of 2,220 people had been arrested for violating the gun ba, according to the Philippine National Police.
