THE Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry plans to help show subdivision homeowners in Cebu City how to manage their waste and earn at the same time.
Samuel Chioson, CCCI president, said on Wednesday that the CCCI would launch the waste enterprise project this year as as part of its advocacy to protect the environment.
A core group will be formed to start the project.
“There’s no name for the project yet. It’s aimed at encouraging those living in subdivisions to compost their own biodegradable waste and sell their recyclables to scrap collectors,” said Chioson.
He said homeowners could do vermicomposting and sell the waste as fertilize so “ they could manage their waste and earn at the same time.”
This is one way for subdivisions to earn income to take care of improvements like security and street lights.
Chioson said he assigned businessman Nestor Archival, an advocate of recycling waste, to lead the committee.
“For the detailed plans on how we will go about our approach, we will meet with other board members so that we can discuss further,” said Chioson.
Chioson also announced that the CCCI set aside P500,000 for the creation of an authorizing body to certify certify organic produce so that farmers can market them in commercial establishments in Cebu and around the country.
“There is a real need for this body. Our farmers can’t market their organic produce because they don’t have the money to pay for certifications given by bodies outside Cebu,” said Chioson.
The process is very expensive.
He noted a growing demand in Cebu alone for organic produce with the presence of international hotels.
“It would be a waste if our local farmers cannot tap this market,” said Chioson./Reporter Aileen Garcia-Yap
