As Vice President Leni Robredo barnstormed across Cavite province on Friday, its residents—who share their roots with revolutionary compatriots who stood up against Spanish rule more than 100 years ago—sought to defy their governor’s wish to deliver 800,000 votes for Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
Their fighting call was “800k minus one”—each warm body in every whistle-stop across the second most vote-rich province in the country meant one less voter for the late dictator’s son.
Right now, Robredo is racing against both time and survey numbers to close the wide gap between herself and Marcos.
But in an interview at one of her whistle-stops in Dasmariñas City, Robredo expressed confidence that she can deliver in the province once won over by Marcos in the 2016 vice presidential race by over 150,000 votes.

“The numbers are understandable,” she said. “Our opponent prepared hard for this while I have decided very late.” Still, the opposition candidate is “more hopeful” now than when she was an administration candidate.
“[Back then], I had a lot of things in 2016 that I do not have now, like endorsements of local government officials. But I have much now that I did not have back then, and that is my volunteers,” she told reporters.
