MANILA, Philippines — The professor in Vice President Leni Robredo appeared to show up during her campaign sortie in Oriental Mindoro when she gave young supporters their assignment. Their task: to convert their parents who are Marcos supporters to vote for her and her team.

During the People’s Rally in Calapan, Oriental Mindoro on Thursday, Robredo was reading placards made by supporters when a particular placard with the words, “Anak ng BBM supporter for Leni” caught her eye.

“Ito, may assignment ka pagkatapos nito ah, ‘Anak ng BBM supporter for Leni,’” Robredo said, drawing cheers from the crowd. “O may assignment ka. Meron pa tayong 68 days para kumbinsihin ang magulang niyo.”

Marcos is currently the frontrunner according to many surveys: last February, Pulse Asia released a survey which showed that Marcos would be the runaway winner if elections were held from January 19 to 24, 2022, with 60 percent of the respondents picking him.

More placards

It has been customary for Robredo to read placards of supporters during campaign sorties, especially with the emergence of catchy and funny groups supporting Robredo.

The groups became a trending topic in Twitter after supporters during the Cebu rally last February 24 came out with the groups “Daks for Leni” and “Alter for Leni.”  During that rally, Robredo thanked the young people for their creativity and passion, saying that this kind of energy is needed to propel her campaign forward.

This statement from Robredo led to more daring statements like Oriental Mindoro’s play on the campaign slogan, editing it to read as “Sa Gobyernong Tapat, Malalasing ang lahat (Everyone would get drunk).

“‘Pag nanalo si Leni, six years akong mag-susuot ng pink.’ Promise mo iyan ha? ‘Sa gobyernong tapat–’ Oh my God, ‘–malalasing ang lahat,’” Robredo said.

During another sortie in Sampaloc, Manila last Wednesday, Robredo also read  borderline lewd statements — even bolder than the “Daks for Leni.”

“’Daks for Leni’ — parang may protesta dito.  ‘Sa Gobyernong’ — kayo talaga, magkaka-problema ako dahil sa inyo — ‘Sa Gobyernong Tapat, Madidiligan Lahat,’” she said.
