MANILA, Philippines — Candidate Leody De Guzman on Saturday said he remains hopeful his party’s failure to secure a rally permit may not lead to his disqualification from the presidential race.
During the Annabel’s Media Forum, De Guzman was asked if his party, the Partido Lakas ng Masa (PLM), would ask the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to ease the rules in campaigning.
“Hindi ko pa alam ‘yung plano ng partido ko, ‘yung PLM. Ang mas worry namin kung kami kakasuhan du’n sa nangyari pero mukhang sa statement naman ni James Jimenez at saka nung iba pang mga lawyer, mukhang hindi naman aabot doon sa disqualification. Natutuwa na kami doon,” De Guzman said, referring to the Comelec spokesperson.
(I don’t know what the plan of my party, PLM, is. Our worry is if we will be charged for what happened but based on James Jimenez’s statement and other lawyers, I think we will not reach disqualification. We’re already happy with that.)
On February 8, Comelec said that the camp of De Guzman may commit an election offense if they continue their proclamation rally at the Bantayog ng Mga Bayani due to lack of permit.
However, De Guzman and his team pushed through with the event during the official kick off of the campaign season.
De Guzman is running with activist Walden Bello who is seeking the vice presidency. Together, their tandem is pushing for a government and economy of the masses.
