MANILA, Philippines — Now-retired Commission on Elections (Comelec) Commissioner Rowena Guanzon has been shortlisted for the position of Deputy Ombudsman for the Visayas.
Guanzon is one of three names that the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) endorsed to President Rodrigo Duterte last December 17, 2021, for the position.
Aside from Guanzon, included in the shortlist are Beda Angeles Epres and Dante Flores Vargas.
Whoever will be chosen will replace Deputy Ombudsman for the Visayas Paul Elmer Clemente whose term of office ended on November 6, 2021.
Malacañang has not announced yet a replacement for Clemente.
Guanzon has confirmed that she was shortlisted for the position during an interview with the Foreign Correspondents Association of the Philippines (FOCAP).
Guanzon’s term of office at the Comelec ended on Wednesday, February 2.
The retired commissioner recently hogged the headlines after disclosing an alleged “interference” in the disqualification cases against Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who is running for president in the May elections. Guanzon revealed her vote favoring the disqualification of Marcos Jr. – saying he did not pay his tax deficiencies which is tantamount to moral turpitude, and also asserted she and another commissioner were being deprived of their votes on the disqualification petitions against Marcos Jr.
