MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) clarified Tuesday that a petition seeking to cancel the candidacy of presidential aspirant Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is still pending and not yet denied as earlier announced.

“We have an update on Tiburcio [case]. It’s been submitted to the [second] division. It’s what I have in the update given to me, so clearly an error was made saying it was already disposed of because it is with the division right now,” Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez said in an online press briefing.

“Hopefully, we can have more information regarding this particular case very soon,” he added.

The petition, filed by Tiburcio Marcos, claims that the real Marcos Jr. already died and the person who filed his certificate of candidacy for president in the May elections is allegedly an impostor.

To recall, a decades-old rumor alleges that Marcos Jr. was stabbed and died during a scuffle while studying abroad. The Marcos family supposedly looked for his look-alike to replace him. Marcos Jr., however, had denied this in his May 2021 vlog.
