MANILA, Philippines — Ninety percent of Quezon City’s 27,000 active COVID-19 cases are asymptomatic, Mayor Joy Belmonte shared on Tuesday.

“Well, here in Quezon City, we have seen better days. So, as of the report to me last night, our numbers have shot up to 3,419 daily active cases on average from the week January 3 to January 10. So, that’s really quite a lot,” she said on ANC’s Headstart.

“In terms of total active cases, our numbers have jumped about 27,000 active cases. But, I’d like to add that given this total population, 90.61 percent are asymptomatic, 9.14 percent are mild, and 0.22 [percent] are moderate, and we have no critical, severe, or deaths,” she continued.

Despite thousands of active cases, Belmonte noted that there is no need to increase the capacity of their quarantine facilities yet.

“Actually, our quarantine facilities are still at 69 percent. So, there’s still quite a lot of beds available at the moment,” she pointed out.

“In addition to the 1,733 [quarantine facilities] that we have in the city, our barangays also have quarantine facilities that total about 900,” added the mayor.

Further, 72 percent of the city’s 2.9 million population are already vaccinated against COVID-19, Belmonte said.

“Using the PSA statistic of 2.9 million [population], we have vaccinated 72 percent already of our total population, even without the five to 11-year olds included,” she said.

Currently, Metro Manila, where Quezon City is situated, is under Alert Level 3.
