MANILA, Philippines — Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan on Sunday revealed that he had tested positive for COVID-19.
“I got the results of my twice-weekly routine RT PCR test last night and was surprised that the test results turned out positive,” said Pangilinan in an Instagram post. Pangilinan is gunning for the vice presidency in the upcoming elections.
Pangilinan said that he was surprised by the result as he exhibited no symptoms at all, adding that he was even able to exercise the night before his test results were released.
“My doctor sister tells me [that] with labs swamped with a tsunami of testing due to the surge, the possibility of contamination and a false positive is not remote,” said Pangilinan.
“Hence I have been retested today and we are awaiting the results,” he added.
Pangilinan also said that he tested negative on an antigen test — along with his family — on Sunday morning.
“Everyone tested negative via antigen testing this morning, including myself and we, are awaiting the results of the RT-PCR tests due tomorrow,” said the vice-presidential aspirant.
Meanwhile, with the first test turning out positive, his wife Sharon Cuneta along with their children have now quarantined themselves in different rooms.
COVID-19 cases in the country are currently rising exponentially with the health department earlier reporting the highest registered number of daily new cases at 28,707 since the pandemic started in 2020.
Active infections currently number 128,114, and the confirmed total at 2,965,447.
