MANILA, Philippines — A group made up of members of the clergy on Wednesday warned the public not to be misled by any attempt to “distort and reframe history” especially amid the 2022 national and local elections.

Simbahan para sa Katarungan, a group composed of several bishops, priests and nuns, also stated that everyone should discern the truth of the country’s history and “apply such wisdom to present realities.”

“With the election season upon us, we underscore that every Filipino should assess and consider carefully what is true: Marcos is no hero,” the group said in a statement.

The group pointed specifically to the Marcoses, which they say had funds to engage in “all manner of disinformation or spread of untruths, true to their unrepentant form.”

“Their wealth was stolen, their stories are false, and they continue to peddle lies and unscrupulous methods of self-aggrandizement and public influence,” the group said.

They then told Filipinos not to go back to those “who failed our trust and failed this nation,” and take pride in people who “assert democratic rights and genuine development” for all.

This statement came in time for the 2022 elections where notable aspirants include the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos’ son, Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr, who is vying for presidency.

Marcos also recently announced his tandem with presidential daughter and Davao Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio.

Other notable presidential aspirants include Vice President Leni Robredo, labor leader Leody de Guzman, and Senators Manny Pacquiao, Panfilo Lacson, and Bong Go.
