MANILA, Philippines — A lawmaker urged his colleagues in the House of Representatives to identify and act on priority bills before they begin their election campaigns by early January next year.

Former Speaker and Taguig-Pateros Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano made the call as both chambers of Congress resume plenary sessions on Monday after a monthlong break.

“For the priority measures, given that it’s almost election time by January, we know that congressmen will be then busy with campaigning … I will also advise that they pick five to 10 important measures, including the [2022 national] budget and then focus on that,” he said.

Cayetano explained that with the May 2022 elections barely a year away, most lawmakers would already be busy with their reelection bids by January.
