MANILA, Philippines — A bill proposing reforms in the pension system for military and uniformed personnel (MUP) has been put on hold for now in the House of Representatives.

House Bill No. 9654, which consolidated 17 similar measures on MUP pension reforms, was archived in the meantime after it was scheduled to be tackled by the House plenary in August.

Albay Rep. Joey Salceda, chair of the House ad hoc committee on the MUP pension system, said the panel deferred action while waiting for a clarification on the bill’s applicability.

“The committee decided to wait for a clarification of President Rodrigo Duterte’s position on the scope of applicability of the bill. We decided that it was best to defer the matter until clarity on this matter could be achieved,” Salceda said in a statement.

He noted the President’s position that “changes to the pension and benefits structure should apply only to new entrants.”
