MANILA, Philippines — Former Sen. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. faces more legal challenges against his plan to succeed President Duterte.
Two groups of civil society leaders and martial law survivors on Friday said they would file separate petitions asking the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to invalidate the presidential bid of the son and namesake of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos in the 2022 national elections.
Election lawyer Howard Calleja, the groups’ lawyer, echoed the issues raised in the Nov. 2 petition of several groups that moved for the cancellation of Marcos’ certificate of candidacy due to his conviction for a criminal offense in 1995 for his failure to file income tax returns and pay income taxes from 1982 to 1985.
He said other petitioners, led by Rommel Bautista and Bagong Alyansang Makabayan chair Dr. Carol Araullo, would file a similar legal action before the Comelec next week. —Marlon Ramos
