LEGAZPI CITY––A 28-year-old man drowned Wednesday in a river swollen by heavy rains brought by Tropical Storm “Jolina” (International name: Conson) in Placer town in Masbate province.
Colonel Joriz Cantoria, Masbate police chief, said in a report that the victim was Nissan Sinilong of Barangay Matagangtang.
Cantoria said the initial investigation showed that the victim fell into the swollen Matagangtang river and drowned. His body was recovered around 7:30 a.m. at the riverside.
On Tuesday, six fishermen were rescued after their boat capsized in the seawaters off Barangay Matayum of Cataingan town around 6 a.m. before “Jolina” made landfall at Dimasalang town 37 km away.
Cantoria said authorities immediately responded and rescued Omar Villa, Joseph Ortiz, John Gancia, Jonathan Abejo, Analyn Armal, and her husband Armando, all of Barangay Aguda.
Cantoria said that while they were about to retrieve their fishing net, they encountered big waves, causing the boat to capsize.
