SAN ANTONIO, Zambales — The province has recorded its first case of the more transmissible Delta variant of the new coronavirus, an official said Thursday.

Gov. Hermogenes Ebdane Jr. confirmed this in a Facebook live, saying the patient is a 2-year-old girl in this town.

Ebdane said the child’s mother is a healthcare worker who first contracted COVID-19 on July 29. The next day, the husband and the child also tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, which causes severe respiratory disease.

Their specimen samples were sent to the Philippine Genome Center on August 5.

The result came out on August 23 showing that only the child was confirmed to be a carrier of the Delta variant, Ebdane said. INQ
