Tokyo logs record 5,042 new infections

TOKYO — Tokyo logged a record 5,042 new cases of the novel coronavirus on Thursday, exceeding the previous day’s record high of 4,166, according to the metropolitan government.

It was the first time the daily figure has topped 5,000. Thursday’s tally represented an increase of 1,177 from the same day last week.

The seven-day moving average increased 64% to 3,647, compared with 2,224 cases for the preceding seven-day period.

The number of people with serious symptoms was 135, up 20 from the previous day.

Okinawa Prefecture logged 648 cases on Thursday, setting a new record for the third consecutive day.

Also on the day, the Tokyo Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games announced that 31 more people had tested positive for the coronavirus. It was the second consecutive day for Games-related cases to set a record high.

A total of 353 people connected to the Games have now tested positive. The committee began announcing testing results on July 1.
